Frequently Asked Question

  • Are gas operated lanterns safe?

Yes, all of the lanterns on our site have been tested and certified by CSA International as safe and CSA compliant. Still, the normal use of a gas lantern does result in high operating temperatures and certain cautions and safety measures do apply. Read and understand all safety and installation instructions prior to operating any gas appliance.  We do not sell gas lanterns for use inside.

  • What sort of maintenance is required for gas lanterns?

Gas Copper Lanterns are designed to provide a lifetime of maintenance free service. Occasional cleaning of the glass panels may be necessary as well as a simple dusting of the fixture.  To help maintain the shape of the flame clean the burner tip by running dental floss through the slot when you clean the glass periodically.

  • Do gas lanterns blow out?

The design and construction of Copper fixtures minimizes the potential for the flame to blow out, however, under certain circumstances the possibility for a blowout may exist.

Make sure the light fixture is plumbed to a dedicated gas supply with properly regulated gas pressure.

Check for proper closure of the door panel and that all glass panels are intact and properly seated within the cage assembly of the light fixture.

When lit, the shutoff valve at the base of the burner assembly should be set according to the instructions included with each lantern to ensure proper flame height.  Some burners are equiped with a height adjustment screw that can only be changed with the tool supplied.

If blowouts persist, our service department is always available to troubleshoot and resolve any problems.  Wind Guards are available as an option to any lantern and will usually solve a frequent blow out problem.

Electronic Igniters when installed on the lantern will re-light the lantern if blown out by the wind.

  • How much overhead clearance do gas lanterns require?

National safety standards require a minimum of 12" from the top of the light fixture vent stack to the ceiling if constructed with combustible material. 6" is required on each side to an adjacent wall.  All lanterns available on this site have been tested and constructed with the required back clearance in order to be certified.

Always check local building codes for applicable clearance requirements, they could vary in your area.  Those stated here are minimum standards.  The heat escaping from the venting area can reach temperatures of 500 degrees.  Safety must be the first consideration when installing a gas lantern.

  • How many BTU's does a gas light produce?

The burner assemblies used in the lanterns on our site are rated at 1135 BTU's for natural gas and 2750 BTU's for propane.

  • Will copper lanterns turn green?

When copper oxidizes it produces copper oxide which is green in color. This process is commonly referred to as patina. Under most conditions, copper fixtures will simply darken with age like an old penny.  The amount of patina green that develops depends on the location of the installation and the composition of the air it is exposed to.

  • What is Powder Coating?

Powder Coating is a process in which a free flowing dry powder is applied electrostatically and baked for a period of time. All mounting brackets are powder coated with Dupont YGY polyester texture. This type of painting is more UV, weather and corrosive resistant than conventional painting methods.

  • Do copper fixtures rust?

Copper is one of the most resilient materials found in nature and is capable of withstanding the harshest of environments without rusting.  All of our lanterns are constructed with 20oz. high grade copper and fitted with solid brass components to provide a lifetime of maintenance free service.  For coastal and salt water environments we offer aluminum mountings and accessories using all copper and brass,  aluminum and copper.  Flush mount lanterns have all copper construction and bracket mount styles as of Jan 1, 2017 will be shipped with aluminum mountings and accessories.  All copper construction is available as a custom option.  Be aware that all copper construction, especially when in contact with stucco,  can produce stains as rain washes the developing patina off the lanterns backplate and it runs down the wall.

  • How do you mount or hang a gas lantern?

Gas Copper Lanterns are typically mounted to a standard 4x4 electrical box and are supplied with mounting hardware. Larger fixtures and custom built mounts may require alternate mounting options and additional hardware.  All fasteners required to attach your backplate directly to a building surface must be supplied by the installer to ensure that proper fasteners are used in the installation.  When this type installation is necessary, proper mounting holes will be provided in the mounting plate.

  • Do you offer lanterns with electronic ignition?

Yes, this option is available on any of our Copper Lanterns. The addition of an igniter will remove the lantern from the quick ship category as it must be rewired to accept the igniter.

*Please note:  While The CopperSmith uses a proprietary E-Lyte fully tested Igniter that is greatly improved from those previously available, igniters are not without issues.  We recommend the use of manual burners whenever possible for a trouble free installation.  Igniters have a 1 year warranty that does not include labor to replace.  FYI, there are no "trouble free igniters" for gas lanterns.

  • Can you recommend a Contractor in my area to install my Copper Lantern?

Resources should be available at your local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau for background on any Contractor or Electrician before installing your new Gas Copper Lantern.

  • How much does it cost to operate a gas lantern per month?

As with any gas appliance, the answer depends on the rate you pay for gas in your area.  BTU ratings are found on each lantern on the product detail page.  For an aproximate monthly cost use this formula:

Multiply the btu per hour rate shown by 720.  Multiply that result by CCF or CHF rate for your area.

*Your CCF or CHF is shown on gas bills for your area or call your gas supplier for that infomation.

We see monthly costs vary from $6.00 a month per lantern where gas is economical to as high as to $24.00 for lanterns that have manual ignitions and burn 24 hours a day.  For safety considerations, we recommend tuning your lantern off if you will be away for extended periods of time.

  • I have heard electronic igniters can be problematic, is that true?

The answer is yes, they can be.  We found the "glow type" 120V igniters to be the most problematic. We have however had problems with all types both the 24 Volt and the 110V types that are currently on the market.  The good news is that The CopperSmith has develpoed a new 110V Igniter designed and manufacturered specifically for their own lanterns.  It has undergone a year of extensive testing and we have very high hopes that it will be the solution to the problems that have plagued electronic lantern igniters installed in gas lanterns.   We do recommend that you consider a manual burner whenever possible.  They use a small amount of gas when left to burn 24/7 and are virtually problem free.  With a little cleaning of the burner tip once a year, they will provide many years of trouble free service.

  • Do The CopperSmith lanterns have a warranty?

Yes.  The lantern itself has a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser when installed and used as it was intended and purchased from an authorized dealer.  All other parts, sockets, burners, igniters have a one year warranty.  The CopperSmith will replace glass that may have been broken in shipment or during the first year of use free of charge.  After that glass is available for purchase from your distributor.  The CopperSmith can repair or provide replacement parts for any of their products.

Please keep a record of your purchase to ensure any warranty rights.

  • Do you sell parts to convert my electric lantern to gas?

No.  We do not convert electric lanterns to gas or sell parts to do so.  Gas lanterns must be constructed with materials that will not burn or fall apart under very high temperatures and be properly vented.  Converting other fixtures is very dangerous and we recommend that you do not attempt it.  If you run across converted fixtures in the market, be sure to inquire if they have testing certification.

  • Can I use gas lanterns with propane gas?

Yes.  All The CopperSmith gas lanterns can be fitted with the proper tip to use propane.  Just be sure to select that option when purchasing your lantern.  Using propane gas with the wrong tip will result in an erratic flame that is burning much too hot, too high and smoking.

  • If I install my lanterns in a salt water area will they still be under warranty?

Salt water air or spray will not cause damage to the lantern itself if constructed from a good grade of copper and aluminum.  After Jan 1 2017, CopperSmith lanterns will be supplied with aluminum mountings and acessories giving you a product that can be installed in salt air or harsh environements for no extra charge.

We also offer certified Turtle Light adapters for all of The CopperSmith Lanterns, whihc can be required in areas that are near the coast.  Please verify with your local code enforcecment office if they are a requirement in your area before purchasing your lantern.

  • Does The CopperSmith make custom lanterns?

Yes.  A big part of their business is custom fabrication.   Call us 800-910-3275 and we will help you begin that process for your project.

  • Are The CopperSmith lanterns made in the US?

The majority of The CopperSmith lanterns are made in the factory owned by Bill Green, owner of The CopperSmith who has an extensive background in metal fabrication, in his facility in China.  The standard stock lanterns are shipped to the CopperSmith headquarters and warehouse in Foley Alabama where they are fitted with any accessories or modifications, such as electronic igniters.  They are then tested and shipped from Foley, Alabama.  All aspects of fabrication in both facilities are directed and supervised by the owner Bill Green who splits his time between the two facilities.  All CopperSmith Copper Lanterns are designed specifically by The CopperSmith and manufactured in their own facilities, not a 3rd party manufacturer.  The quality of these lanterns is superb and no shortcuts are taken from the same procedures that have been used for years in the Alabama facility.

Custom lanterns may be made in either facility and custom modifications are usually made in Alabama.  Operating both these facilities makes it possible for The CopperSmith to keep a tremendous inventory on hand allowing them to ship most stock orders in 5 days or less,  at very competitive prices.

If you have a US only required project, they can make your lanterns in Alabama to meet that requirement, contact us for a price.
